Boating Information

Boating enthusiasts of the Eastern Region enjoy the East Coast of New Zealand's North island and its variety of beaches, inlets, Islands and natural harbours. Many also enjoy the lakes of the Central North Island. None of these areas are immune from extreme Weather, Cold, raging Wind and Wave conditions or many other dangers which continually claim the lives of unfortunate, or ill-prepared mariners.

Coastguard is there to help:

From the Northern Tip of the Coromandel Peninsula, through the Bay of Plenty, around the East Cape, past Gisborne and then Napier, the Units of Eastern Region Coastguard are located at key centres in readiness to assist vessels in distress. Each Coastguard Unit monitors dedicated radio frequencies, broadcasts Weather Forecasts at regular intervals and is equipped with one or more Rescue vessels manned by trained volunteers and has access to search aircraft and rescue helicopters.

As the old dictum says: "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure". To this effect Coastguard provide, or will organise, Boating Education - training courses available to recreational boating enthusiasts throughout the year.
